April 23nd
After a long spell of sunny days and snow predicted, it was not a surprise to wake up to fresh snow. We got about 5 inches in town which meant their would be a lot more higher up on the mountain. For all the ski bums in Chamonix this meant many smiling faces, and a forecast for more snow.
While in Chamonix I am staying with my good friend Stian Hagen who is a professional skier and a local mountain guide. He is also the main person I will be shooting photos with. He has lived in Chamonix for 14 years and has this place pretty well dialed. With out the help of some local knowledge you would be very lost in these huge mountains.
We spent most of our day riding the Grand Montes and Le Tour, with about 20+ inches of new snow and still snowing, our day was mostly spent riding powder. We occasionally stopped in the trees to shoot a few photos, but knew we were most likely not going to get anything super stellar because of the flat light. Today was a day to enjoy new snow with your smiling friends!
As a photographer you almost always want to have your camera with you just in case something magical will happen up there. Often times you just want to leave it behind and just go freeriding. For this day I still kept my gear pretty light, but opted to bring my Mark III just in case some great action presented itself. In my bag was a Mark III, 16-35, 24-105, probe, avalanche shovel, a Red Bull, and a bunch of Swiss chocolate. When skiing with a pack of ripping skiers, you better be able to keep up or you will be left behind.
