A Week In The Life: Colby Brown - Guatemala Day 12

By 5:30AM, we are out the door and waiting for the shuttle to pick us up and take us to Parque National Tikal, home of the most recognized and revered Mayan temple complexes in the world. Typically I am not a huge fan of visiting locations that are known as tourist traps, but I will definitely make an exception this time. Visiting Guatemala and not exploring the ruins of Tikal is like visiting India for the first time and not getting a glimpse of the Taj in Agra. It is just something you have to do.

A Week In The Life: Colby Brown - Guatemala Day 11

From Coban, we head north towards the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal. Now while I always recommended local transportation, sometimes that comes at a cost. While the majority of chicken buses come without incident, the smaller local shuttles are much more “interesting” to say the least. Now say you have a van that holds 12 people in relative comfort. While that may work in the US, most other countries, Guatemala included, will continue to fill up the van until it is bursting at the seems. This area of Guatemala is in the low lands which is loaded with heat and humidity. Add that to the fact that almost no vehicles have air conditioning and that you are crammed into a van that seats 12 but is currently holding 20 and you get the idea.  The guy next to me kept eyeballing me, but that might have been because I was sweating all over him. Needless to say it was a blast.
