Camilla Stoddart - Day Four

I am up early from my tent to be greeted with a beautiful day. We are packed into our kayaks and ready to go pronto… stopping at beaches and loving the warm weather I play with my G11 in its underwater housing trying to get shots of the friendly seals under the water.

Stopping for lunch we notice that the wind is starting to rip around the point. Before long it is close to gale force. Our stunning leisurely paddle in the calm ocean is over and we battle against huge swell and howling winds. For every stroke we stay still, for every rest we go backwards. We are fighting a loosing battle. All I really care about is not going over as my F-stop camera bag sits in the belly of the kayak cradling its precious cargo,.. It is time to take refuge on our lunch beach and re think our plans. Before long we are joined by other kayakers being washed up on the beach like drift wood.

We decide that the only way back is to walk out, so we holler a water taxi to collect the kayaks and we start the beautiful walk out through the native kiwi bush.

We are back at the car in a couple of hours and start the 2 hr drive to the West Coast. Driving down the incredible road to the West, it is incredible how different this rugged and wild coast is to the Able Tasman we were at just a few hours ago. This is the true magic of New Zealand.
