Another travel day and we are at the mouth of Lake Wanaka, where the Makaroura River feeds this mighty lake which I live on. We are going for a hike today up the Wilkin River in The Mt Aspiring National Park. To avoid the 8hr flat walk up the river to get to the mountains we jump in a chopper and fly up in minutes. The flight is stunning and I shoot as much as I can of the hanging glaciers, roaring waterfalls and winding rivers.
We were scheduled to hike up to Lake Diana, which is a melt water lake with a hanging glacier feeding it. Dropped off at Top Forks hut we have one river crossing and a 4 hr hike ahead of us. The day before had seen torrential rain and the river was scarily high. After a hr or so of wandering the river banks looking for a place to cross, we come to the decision that it is just too high. Change of plan and we hike up the opposite valley, through some incredible bush to Rabbit Pass. It was just such a beautiful walk.
