Do you remember when you realized photography was more than a point and shoot camera?
Sort of. I remember always loving my little Olympus P&S, One day I got back from a Fissile cabin shred trip and looked at a picture of 3 buddies snowshoeing out of an early evening alpen glow rip down the banana shoot on Fissile. It was dark and a full moon just cracked over the summit. I see that picture like it was yesterday. I knew there was more to discover that day.
What was your first camera? And what is your current.
The first I remember is the Olympus P&S, the images were so crisp. I wish I still had it - but it finally died. Now I use Canon DSLR's.ian1
What has photography done to your life?
It some how convinced me to start a magazine, then some how had me working for a much larger evil magazine but then made me realize I am not interested in marketing images. Now it has brought me here, where I am happy to work in a field developing product that lets others play in the backcountry longer and stronger.
As a career photography has let you see much of the world. Where are the places you wish to return or are most memorable?
Most memorable on my list is Japan. A ten-day trip turned into 1 month while the north Alps saw the biggest storm in 88 years. Deep fresh POW every day but one. Switzerland’s singletrack is a close second.
Being an action sport photographer, one would generally assume you also play the games you shoot. What are favorite sports to do with out a camera bag on your back?
Snowboarding, snowboarding and snowboarding with or without bindings, I can’t get enough.
Who or what do you look too find inspiration in?
Wood grain is my greatest influence followed closely by miserable weather.
Life behind a lens means being witness to the best of times and the worst. Please let us know an experience from each.
Best: My friends. Something about that camera makes friends go the extra mile. Dave B’s first run at Morning Glory (pictured) or Eric’s Soucy on any day, but most memorable on Speed Ball in Singing Pass.
Worst: Lucky so far, nothing tragic while behind the lens. But loosing friends you meet through the lifestyle is never a good feeling.
ian2What would you say to a young shooter with who dreams of traveling the world taking photos of the elite athletes in our sports?
Don't kill your bro because you think the light is 'all time' - it's still just a photo.
Tell us one over looked lesson you have learned in the photo business:
Prepare to watch your friends ride your lines.
