Day One: Saturday - First Day of the Race

Today the BC Bike Race kicked of at Shawnigan Lake in super lush British Columbia. Today started at 6:30am and the race start time was at 9:00. In between wake up and start time I had to get my team in mental shape for the day, find a road map, a trail map and get as much info from race organizers as possible so I could get some work done.

The first task was relatively easy, Team Awesome/modestbike are pretty much self-maintaining. The two girls who are pretty good at pedaling a bike are also good and taking care of themselves. The next group of tasks was to figure out where the hell I was headed today. Unfortunately for some of us photographer’s information was almost nil. What was available were bad map maps with very loose directions.

I spent half my day driving around searching for the recommended spots to shoot. This race boasts its endless lush singletrack, which is rare for a race but also ideal for photography. With almost no information on how to access it with out riding the 100km route it was a lame battle.

I still got some shots and little bit of sun in the 35 degree heat, but I was literally cursing the lack of effort thrown at the media as I drove the lonely road back and forth search for the sign that never existed. It’s a shame for race with so much to offer the camera that it we missed most of it. Whatever though, its first day and likely to get better as I get accustomed to the surrounding.

Here are some moments from today:
