Hi, my name is Ian Millar, I am a photographer, journalist, avid snowboarder and mountain biker living Whistler, British Columbia. I started my venture into photography after my mom bought me a used EOS-1 camera body. I didn’t get a lens until another year after while I was living in Toronto when I took a forced break from mountain life nursing a broken elbow. And like many others, injury made me realize that photography could keep me close to the action. Not just that but a longtime love for framing images lead me to where I am today.

Today I am packing for the BC Bike Race. This race is in its second year and is held over 7 days with over 700 km’s of beautiful British Columbia singletrack mountain biking to be had. For me shooting XC racing isn’t first on my list of sports to photograph. Lacking any of the thrills of the usual stuff, it might seem a little boring for some but one thing it does provide is a lot of character. Capturing determination and pain often make for strong images. With over 700km’s of mountain pedaling, emotional moments are guaranteed.

Last Fall I travel to Costa Rica to cover a similar 4-day race. It was there that I learned about capturing the emotion of human suffering for personal pleasure and glory. It becomes really easy to get up in the ambience and feel part of such races. I know now before the race even starts that I am not likely to bring home the best images I have ever captured but the challenge of capturing a unique ambience is an alluring experience for me. In the next 7 days I’ll be riding a my bike with best XC riders in the world, hanging out of helicopters, piggybacking ATV’s and rallying the new team Toyota Tacoma truck from Victoria to Whistler- it should be quite the ride.

Currently I work as a freelance designer, writer, photographer, bike park rat and lover of Japanese snow culture. I have just recently left my position as Editor in Chief at Mt.Biking magazine. Previous to that learning experience I self-published Modest Bike Magazine and am currently acting Creative Director of Noboard Magazine as well participate in many web projects floating about in cyber space.
