I bought this bag to use on city shoots as a replacement for a messenger-style bag, which although convenient, had led to a painful bout of sciatica; it turns out that carrying a heavy load with the weight unevenly distributed really isn’t good for your back. So a backpack which distributes the weight evenly but which can be accessed quickly and easily in a similar way to a shoulder bag seemed like an ideal solution. Now that I’ve used it on a couple of real-world shoots, I’ve formed some opinions about it. So let’s start with the good points. First, you can cram an awful lot of kit in it. On a recent trip to London, I filled it with my Nikon Z8 and two lenses, my IR-converted Fuji X-T2 with a zoom, my full collection of LEE Filters, spare batteries, cables, chargers, 16” MacBook and various spare items of clothing. And with the expandable roll top there was room for plenty more. For a bag which will supposedly fit under the seat a plane (I’ll find out if this is true next month), being able to fit the MacBook in is a real bonus. Second, even when loaded with a large amount of kit, it’s comfortable and distributes the weight well, despite not having a waist belt. With less heavy loads, you can carry it all day without issues. Getting kit in and out is on the whole, easy enough to do without having to take the bag off your back and lay it down on the ground, as you would with a standard backpack. This makes it really suited to city work, where you find yourself wanting to access your camera a lot more often than on a landscape shoot. It’s not quite as smooth a process as with a messenger bag, but I’m willing to give up a little bit of convenience for a bag that’s not going to cause injury. Another plus point is the abundance of very useful pockets for organising memory cards, documents, batteries, meds and so on - this aspect of the bag is very well thought through. Of course nothing is perfect and I do have a couple of gripes. First, although the camera cube is well-protected, there is no protection on the sides of the bag where you access your kit, so it’s vulnerable to bumps and knocks. This seems like a bit of a design flaw; it surely wouldn’t have been too difficult to put a thin layer of foam on the sides of the bag? I place cleaning cloths between my equipment and the side of the bag to give it a bit more protection, but this is something I feel shouldn’t really have to. Another flaw is that kit placed at the bottom of the camera cube (when the bag is upright) is really difficult to access. I get that for reasons of structural integrity the zips couldn’t open closer to the bottom of the bag, but if the cube had about 1.5 - 2cm of padding at the bottom, kit placed in it would be situated just a little bit higher up the bag and access would be fine. I’ll probably work around this issue by putting a layer of foam between the bottom of the bag and the ICU, but it’s disappointing that this is necessary. So overall, this is a very good bag, but with a couple of irritations.
Wherever I go people compliment me on the look of this bag. I have used it as a photographer's bag on commercial shoots, on a carry-on bag for travel, or as a mix for both. Perfect size to put a weekend's worth of clothes in, a pair of shoes and some basic camera equipment for a little city trip in Europe for example. The roll top allows you to expand it how much you need, and the top strap allows you to strap down a jacket on top. Optional tripod straps on the bottom are super useful too. I've tried to optimise this bag in my head and I can't, it's perfect for me.
My least favorite thing about a lot of camera bags is how heavy the empty bag is. Multiple layers of nylon or filler that don't block water, a jillion zippers adding weight, and the bag with your kit just weighs a ton. This bag is so light, but the camera compartment adequately protects your kit, there's plenty of space for other random items, with a laptop compartment and an outer pocket for (best be thin) other items. Would have liked included tripod straps, and would have preferred the connection points for that to not be on the bottom, but otherwise, this bag is pretty amazing.
This bag, like other F-Stop bags, is awesome. It’s nice, well built and slick. Perfect !
From housing camera kit to audio gear and even every day work items this pack is seriously the most useful and well made pack I have ever owned. It is not just when it's on your back, but more so when you place it in airline luggage holds, Uber trunks and all the other places packs go. It is unbreakable and protects your belongings rain, hail or shine.
I own this backpack as well as the Ajna and Tilopa. I use this one for when I only want to carry my camera and one extra lens with me in the city. It is nice for street photography as the side pocket (where you can access your camera) is super accessible. I can fit my Ipad pro 11'' in the front pocket and my 16'' laptop in the back pocket (special laptop compartment in the outside part of the backpack). The amazing quality of the fabric makes it very resistant to weather conditions, durable and stay in good shape in-spite of heavy use.
ENG: It often happens that I move around the city on my motorbike with my Dyota 20 L. I find it really comfortable for everyday use, both photographically and for carrying documents, laptops or other small frequently used objects! The design is really modern, the fabric and the zips are even resistant to rain! a TOP product, as only f-stop can do!
Beautiful, useful, comfortable, practical and it seams to be durable.
I have been a f-stop fan for over ten years. My Tilopa bag has been following me all over the world for the last ten years and still works great and shows little sign of its age. When I decided to get another bag for small trips, I decided to go with the Dyota 20L. I had concern about how well my Canon 5D attached with 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens would fit, but no issue at all. The side opening is large enough for easy access. So far I love it. Customer service is great!
