I wanted a smaller bag to carry minimal equipment together with my gripped camera. This bag fits a Pro Small camera insert (it's tight but ok) and is exactly what I needed. Quality is great as always. Together with my Anja, I'm covered for all situations :)
The bag and insert are both well made. Comfortable when carrying. There is enough room for my camera (D850) with a mounted lens as-well-as one or two extra lenses depending on the insert. Plenty of room for a jacket, tablet, and extra gear. It would be nice if the pockets had more storage/organizaton areas. The large front pockets is nice but would be better if it had extra pockets to carry and organize things rather than just a large open pocket. I like the water bottle pockets. I think the weakest point of this bag is carrying a tripod. Yes you can use a water bottle pocket and the side compression straps to sort-of secure a small tripod to the bag. But this seems to be an afterthought rather than purposefully built. But it’s no worse than any other of F-Stop’s bags or the majority of other manufacturers bags. Come on guys, it’s a camera bag and we use tripods!
Thanks for the feedback, the Guru UL is part of the UltraLight series, it's built for light packing and a limited amount of camera gear. That's the reason for leaving out the pockets and organizational space. The tripod can be mounted on the sides of the pack with the compression straps, or on the back with additional Gatekeeper straps. This a comfortable, easy-to-access easy-to-organize pack. Up until now, with this pack, I have never been much for hauling around my photo stuff in a back pack. I’m not as thrilled as I could be with optional inside case system, but I have to say it works. Also I like the customizable Velcro dividers after all! I’ve taken this pack along on four all day hikes, and I’ve decided to make it into my everyday carry, photo stuff or no photo stuff. I like the little raincoat! Fits well and fits very quickly. P.S I owe YouTube reviewer Gordon Laing a big thanks for doing this pack in depth!
I just returned from my first trip using this pack and overall I had a great experience with it. I found many positives, including excellent overall construction, light weight, wonderful/easy to use zippers, customizable camera cube, great side pockets for water bottles, fairly comfortable hip and shoulder straps, easy access to camera gear after setting it down (prefer this type of back access), customizable camera cube, and amazingly it did fit underneath the seat in front of me during my flights although with a smaller regional plane I had to partially rest my feet on it (I was careful to not overpack the upper section). Regarding the issues that I found), the main one (and the reason for 4 stars)was that smaller items would tend to get lost between the back portion of the camera cube and the pack wall (to the front of the pack). Initially, I thought I’d lost some items, including some polarizers until I thoroughly search the pack and found them wedged in this area. I fixed the problem by applying some carpet tape to the back of the camera cube and the pack wall and I did not have any further problems during the trip. I would suggest to F Stop that they consider some type of Velcro arrangement in the future. Another issue, really a trade-off, concerns the zippers. For my trip, which was mainly hiking and outdoor photography the zippers were fantastic as it was easy to get into the various pockets. However, in an urban environment, such as getting on a crowded subway, I would not favor this pack because it would be too easy for thieves to get into it. I would end up using a different type of pack. Finally, the hip and shoulder straps do not have much padding. I was initially skeptical, but in use it was fairly comfortable for me and it was a good trade off for a lighter/less bulky pack. Overall, its a great pack and I will certainly use this routinely during travel/outdoor photography.
The guru ultralight was a great backpack for hiking the mountain trails in southern Arizona my Nikon and 2 lenses extra batteries along with water bottles some protein bars and a jacket worked out great on the plane ride for carrying my gear and stowing it under the seat I also like the fact that the camera loads in from the side that goes against your back that’s a plus for security of your gear and easy access when you need it
I have 5 other variations of fStopGear backpacks. Recently, I needed just a small version for a very easy going, small camera gear adventure. So I bought this pack. It turned out to be perfect. I was even able to fit one of my medium ICU’s in it. It fits my back/torso very comfortably. I use a camera clip on my other bags that attaches to the shoulder straps. This bag has much shorter straps, so I’m not sure if my clip placement will work for me until I can try it. But I do think it probably will. I’m always happy with the gear I purchased from this company. This pack is no exception.
Love this pack. I bought it to complement my Ajna 37L pack for days when I’m not ski touring or needing to travel with more gear. Since I have a cage on my A7MIII, I opted for the small pro ICU, which I use with my Ajna as well. It fits the pack without issue, leaving lots of space. The shoulder straps are thin and light, yet extremely comfortable. With the small pro ICU in the main compartment, I still have lots of room for the gear on top. The middle compartment holds lots of stuff and the outer compartment with a vertical zipper and drain holes at the bottom is ideal for wet gear that you want to keep separate from your camera gear. The material in the outer compartment is stretchy, too. It comfortably held a thermos full of hot chocolate for a ski day with a toddler. I feel that this is the ideal pack for resort skiing, mountain biking, or hiking (day trips). Love this pack already for everyday use.
Used this camera bag and the medium shallow icu packed with a Mamiya 6, Mamiya 7, Bessa R3M, Polaroid now camera, tons of 35mm film and 120 film, and a tripod in each side pocket with no problems. This was my personal bag for my flight to Ghana, I stood 30 minutes in customs with this bag on and lugged it around for multiple car rides. Lots packed in during my travel but the comfort never stopped. HIGHLY recommend this bag. Look no further
